Released by Atari in 1979, Asteroids was one of the first major hits of the golden age of arcade games.

With single-player and multi-player modes, and the simple objective of shooting asteroids and saucers whilst avoiding incoming fire, the game proved tremendously popular and inspired many other arcade classics such as Defender and Gravitar.

The game itself was conceived during a meeting between Atari designers Ed Logo and Lyle Rains, who based it on hardware that had been developed for Lunar Lander. Eventually selling over 70,000 units it actually eclipsed the success of Space Invaders in the US market, and at one stage demand put the factory under such pressure that they were forced to ship several hundred Asteroids games in Lunar Lander cabinets.

Sequels included the 1981 release ‘Asteroids Deluxe’ but it’s the original version that most people remember from their misspent youth, and it’s also the one that history records as one of the all time arcade classics.

Over the years most machines have either been scrapped or fallen into disrepair but this rare example has undergone a thorough refurbishment by our specialists, who have restored the cabinet to its former glory and made sure that everything under the bonnet is working just as it should.

Now’s your chance to reach for the stars and own a piece of arcade game history but if you’re hoping to re-create your teenage high scores at the controls then you should be aware that the all time  record is held by then 15 year old Scott Safran of New Jersey, who on November 13, 1982, racked up a stratospheric 41,336,440 points! It must have been a blast…

We at the Games Room Company have always had a great appreciation for video games, ever since the first commercial video game (Computer Space) was released back in 1971. We were one of the first companies to bring over TAITO’s Space Invaders to the UK, quickly going on to supply pubs all over the country. Our founder, Reginald Waldersmith, was a particularly avid fan of Atari’s Pong, describing it as being “quite as fun as real tennis, and not nearly as exhausting”. We have proudly continued his fondness for retro video games, and much of our inventory includes games we’ve manufactured ourselves.
